Information passed over the datapad screen rapidly. There were charts and graphs, and Darren interpreted the data fairly quickly. He had a problem with the composition of the water in the hydroponics garden. Well, he wasn't so much the one with the problem, as the plants weren't growing as quickly as they could be.He did a few analyses and the data was conclusive. Somehow there was a rupture in one of their hoselines. It wasn't getting the proper amount of nutrients along with the water because the nutrients were leaking before they got to the misters.

Darren scratched his head and entered a few numbers into the datapad as he walked quickly through the lab. He had everything in the room he worked in just so. He knew where everything was and he liked it that way. He moved to a different counter and began to sample other soils that he collected. He ran them through a complicated machine and read out the data.

This was an amazing opportunity. He was so glad to be on this ship, but he didn't want to be tending a hydroponics garden. He wanted to be sampling new plant life. Something that he wouldn't get to do any time soon.

Darren reported his findings to his superiors and was on his way back to his work station. He wasn't paying attention to where he was walking, which was a common occurrence when he was deep in thought. He hadn't had much of a chance to rest since they boarded the Exodus. He had to settle into this new confined living arrangement, and to a new life in general. He had never been off Corwin before now. He was glad for the change and the challenge... he was just a little nervous about leaving everything he knew behind to start a new life with very few acquaintances. So a familiar face -- even one that he wasn't particularly happy to see -- would be a relief.

Darren, in his lack of attention to his surroundings, smacked directly into someone else. He dropped several pages of notes he had been carrying in a hard copy, and he also dropped the datapad. Luckily this thing was sturdy-ish. He had a protective case around it so it might not even be damaged.

On the floor, he gathered his things, muttering a kind of apology to his victim. "Sorry, didn't see you there." He said, looking up at them.

He blinked. Familiar faces indeed...

((I hope this is okay! D: Now I'm all self-conscious. lol. XD))

((It's totally fine! No worries! wink.gif ))

Olivia wasn't a friendly or forgiving person- not these days, at least. So, it shouldn't be surprising to learn that when someone walked into her like a completely blind idiot, she immediately looked to the offender with reddened eyes and the intention of verbally tearing him apart. Honestly, the poor bastard she saw upon looking down would have been better off if she didn't recognize him.

Someone more reasonable in the moment might have realized that the guy hadn't touched anything he hadn't previously been invited to touch with a lot less clothing involved- and that this was, therefore, an incredibly minor mistake- but Olivia was not reasonable. Olivia was restless, overheating, and suffering from a nasty headache. Being nice wasn't exactly in the cards for her, she thought.

Her response upon realizing that the clumsy idiot was Darren was actually quite merciful in her mind, though.

Rather than saying anything, she pressed her lips together tightly, turned, then began to walk away.

No way could she deal with him at the moment-- not with her hands shaking and her eyes making her look like she was allergic to everything in the universe. He'd ask questions. He'd want to talk . . . about stuff. . .

Unfortunately, a few steps into her escape she had to pause and steady herself with a hand on a table.

Darren blinked again, trying to clear his mind of strange apparitions, in case that was what was happening. His mind was not fully in the present, or so he thought for the moment. If that really was Olivia. What was she doing on the ship? What happened to her?

He could feel the nagging of nostalgia when he saw her. She looked different somehow, but he didn't know exactly what it was. He couldn't put his finger on why she looked so different to him.

He realized he was staring. He couldn't help it. It was as if one of his reoccurring dreams just jumped out of his subconscious and stood directly in front of him.

She turned around and started to talk away. Darren could understand why she wouldn't want to see him, especially after all this time. Perhaps he really did do something to make her mad...

He gathered the rest of his things and stood up. He walked toward her as she used the table to support herself. "Are you all right?" he asked, genuinely concerned. He hadn't changed much since they had been together... He was still the same old Darren.

Closing her eyes tightly, Liv responded, "I've been better," the words a little bitter and shamelessly so.

It was a strangely honest statement in response to one of her least favorite questions, but it was just as flip and unfriendly as it was truthful. After all, it wasn't a clear answer to what had been asked, and she wasn't trying to sound grateful. The words were, in a way, dismissive.

Having overcome the wave of dizziness that forced her to pause, she reached up to rub at her eyes with the side of one of her hands as she asked, "Is there something you want from me right now? I have work to do."

Always work to do. . . it was her common excuse. Unfortunately, she had a feeling he would want to talk, which was going to be tricky, since she knew her eyes were red, and she looked like crap. She had seen herself. Rubbing at her eyes like she was just tired would only work for so long.

In fact, she dropped her hand down to her side as she looked away from Darren and waited for an excuse to try to get away again. Now that there was talking, she wasn't sure she'd have another easy opportunity to dismiss herself anytime soon.

Darren could hear the bitterness to her words. This solified that it was his fault... whatever he did to her he wanted to make it up to her somehow. He just wanted to heal old wounds. Darren had spent countless hours thinking about what it would be like to see Liv again. He had thought of everything he would say to her if he had the chance... and none of that was coming to his mind now. He had no idea what to say to her... but he wanted to keep her there to talk to him a little more.

They were in public so he couldn't just ask her why she left him... he didn't want to create a scene. It would be the talk of the town if he did. Rumors could spread quickly in a confined area like this one. He hoped that wouldn't happen.

"Err.." He started, trying to figure out a casual way to get her to talk to him. "Well, I don't want to keep you from your work, but maybe we could catch up some time over coffee?" he asked. "It's been a long time..." He shrugged his shoulders as nonchalantly as he could.

"Yeah," Olivia said in an oddly dismissive tone, eying him as if she was tired despite all the pills she had consumed like candy. Lowering her voice a little, she added, "Let's just get coffee, then go back to my place and screw around like teenagers until we fall in love with each other again like nothing ever happened."

He would want to talk about what happened. How could he not? She had dumped him out of the blue, it seemed. They hadn't been arguing. He hadn't confessed to some unforgivable wrongdoing. How could he not have questions? Surely he did, and Liv was pretty sure he wouldn't just push them all aside, even after time that had passed and things had changed.

Being on the Exodus probably didn't help matters, she figured. They were on their way to colonize some new planet, and the whole situation was bound to produce more questions. She had left Corwin to go to Initium. Initium had practically started all of this, and- well, she had been in on it for a while. Already she had been approached with a ton of questions from people who didn't even know her as well as Darren did . . .

Really, she just didn't want to explain herself or this mission to anyone. She didn't see the point in trying to.

In case her message wasn't clear in her sarcastic statement, Liv looked away and added, "I don't think coffee and catching up will do us any good. . ."

She had thought about it. She had thought about it a lot, especially after she learned that Darren was on board, but now- facing him in the moment- she realized she really wasn't ready. . . that she might never be ready. While talking to him again and making sense of the situation had seemed like a way to resolve a lot and ease some burdens, the reality of things was far more complex than she had anticipated.

Darren's upbeat demeanor dropped into a near-scowl quickly and he let out a curt sigh. This would be more of a headache than it was worth, but Darren was still in love with her, as little as he wanted to admit it. He never got any closure.

He crossed his arms, becoming defensive. Darren didn't deal well with sarcasm. He didn't know what to say to that. All he wanted to some kind of explanation, but she was obviously still hostile toward him.

"Well, I guess if you're ever ready to grow up and talk to me about what I did wrong... I'll be around," he said. "Until then, we'll just have a hostile work environment. Let's just hope we don't get any projects together." He gave her the best fake smile he could manage.

He could be a jerk when he wanted to be... although he prefered to be nice... It hurt him to be rude to people.

((Darren ... is very slightly bitter. XD))

"Well . . ." What was she supposed to say to that? How could she respond beyond her bitter grin and reluctant nod?

She hadn't been faced with this attitude from him before, appropriate and understandable though it was, and she had no idea how she could defend herself against it beyond trying to explain herself. Even if she wanted to do that, how could she even begin to try? It couldn't happen here, and it couldn't happen now. She'd taken too many of the wrong pills at the wrong time, they were out in the open, and she wasn't at all prepared for this.

"Okay, then," she decided after a pause, setting her reddened eyes on everything but Darren. Stepping back and away from him, she said, "But for the record--" There was something on the tip of her tongue that seemed worth saying at the moment. "You didn't do anything wrong, so don't be waiting for that conversation."

That might have been a decent thing to say to him if it wasn't spoken with such bite to it. As that crossed her mind, Liv had to turn away and attempt another escape, hoping that this time she wouldn't end up feeling dizzy again and have to stop.

She felt overwhelmed, sick, paranoid as all hell, and angry at someone. She was sure she couldn't do this now.

The reaction from Liv was not what Darren expected. He was expecting her to blow up further, escalating this into a fight. He did not let his surprise show on his face. He just had to lose his temper to cool hers. That was useful to know later... when they would actually get a chance to talk (and Darren hoped they would get that chance).

Not his fault. He tried to let that sink in, but it was just not possible. Obviously he had done something, otherwise they would still be together... or maybe she just didn't love him. Maybe she never did... Overanalyze every piece of information. Darren was good at that.

Darren could see a few of their coworkers taking glances, trying to find out the latest gossip to pass around the lab. "Well... er." Darren rubbed the back of his neck with his hand.

"I have to get back to my reports... I do want to catch up, Liv. I've missed you." He said to her. He was genuine... but since he didn't snap at her again, he would probably be met with a bite.

Liv had to pause yet again. She had to, though she didn't also have to turn around to face him.

"We'll talk sometime, okay?" the words were sharp and caustic but the message suggested she was yielding to some degree. As she resumed her escape almost calmly, she added with less hostility, "Just . . . get back to work."

They would talk, eventually, but it wouldn't be now or anytime soon, she thought. She needed more time to think this through. A couple of years hadn't been enough, apparently, and that meant she'd be needing to do a lot of thinking and preparing for the next encounter. . .

Darren watched her walk away. He wasn't really looking at her though. He was caught in reminiscence. He wanted things to have gone smoother. He hadn't even realized she was on board. Judging by her reaction, she seemed like she was trying to avoid him and that didn't work when he ran into her.

It seemed like they just fell with one another, and Liv was just the first one to get back up.

There was work to be done. He turned and went back to his workstation, but he couldn't get Liv out of his mind.

Darren was determined to smooth things over eventually. He tried to come up with ways to do that... but nothing came to his mind.
